40 crates of original nitrate film, Los Angeles to London without a demurrage day
Original nitrate stock is both hazardous and fragile. A first attempt by the client's prior forwarder was flagged by UK customs and delayed nine days. We pre-classified the shipment and delivered on the venue's opening night.
The challenge
Pacific Film Trust restores and screens early 20th-century film. Their archive includes original nitrate stock, technically a Class 4.1 hazardous material because it self-oxidizes. 40 crates were scheduled to open at a London venue on a fixed date. A prior forwarder had attempted the same shipment and been flagged by UK customs for incorrect hazard classification, delaying arrival by nine days and missing the original screening window.
What we built
- Full pre-classification with the UK's HSE and the receiving venue's insurance carrier, filed six weeks before the shipment.
- IATA-certified hazard-compliant packaging, rated for both the flammable hazard and archival fragility.
- Climate-controlled ground to LAX, then a dedicated freighter to Stansted rather than Heathrow, for direct bonded transfer.
- A single customs broker in both countries, with the same broker's file number on the US export and UK import.
- Two Meridian archival specialists, one in LA and one in London, verifying crate integrity at every handover.
The journey
Crates sealed in Burbank on Monday with a witness from the archive. Ground transit overnight, loaded at LAX Tuesday morning, wheels down at Stansted Wednesday 09:30 GMT. Bonded van to the London venue Wednesday afternoon. Full inventory verification Wednesday evening.
The outcome
Zero damage across 40 crates. Zero UK customs delays. The opening night screening ran on schedule. Pacific Film Trust moved the return shipment back to LA with Meridian eight months later, and has booked a second exhibition for early 2027.
"The people at Meridian understood that nitrate film is not a shipping problem. It is a cultural preservation problem that happens to involve shipping." — Thomas Bentley, Head of Archive, Pacific Film Trust
